Most every item made at Salem Forge is created from mild steel. Mild steel care is similar to cast iron. Not unlike cast iron it is prone to rust. However, with proper care this will not be an issue. Items are given a final heat tempering to create that beautiful black finish and hand rubbed in beeswax.
To clean, rub with a dry cloth or paper towel. To re-season your tools, heat them up in the oven and rub with your preferred substrate. Crisco, bacon grease, olive oil, coconut oil, etc. For lasting protection store wrapped in cloth and keep dry. If rust forms, lightly sand and re-season. We hope it will become a treasured family heirloom!
